Lesson aim: To understand the value of human life, and the attitude and behaviour of society during the Holocaust in Latvia.
“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood” (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 1).
Under the guidance of a museum guide, and using a diverse range of historical sources, including photographs, posters, memoirs and documents, the students will learn about Jewish life and the contribution of the Jewish community in the political, economic and cultural spheres of Latvia before the occupation by Nazi Germany. The students will also gain an understanding of the attitudes, motivations and behaviour of Latvian people during the Holocaust. Why did some people become rescuers of Jews? Why did some people stand by and do nothing? Why did others collaborate with the Nazi authorities and participate in this crime? Through this lesson, covering a painful period in history, the students will be encouraged to become active members of civil society and to oppose discrimination.
